Toilet plan for a home remodel, septic failure or water outage

When the only bathroom is torn out or the septic backs up, a rented porta potty in the driveway keeps the house running. This homeowner guide covers placement, billing, cleaning and neighbors.

When does a household need a porta potty?

A household needs a porta potty when the only bathroom is torn out, the septic system fails, or the water is shut off for repairs. It also helps when a remodel crew of 5 or more works on site. A rented unit keeps the family and the workers out of each other's way.

Common jobs we see at homes across the Coast:

  • A full bathroom remodel in a one-bath house.
  • A septic tank or drain field that backed up and needs digging.
  • A water main repair that leaves the house dry for days.
  • Painters, roofers or a kitchen crew working for a few weeks.

Contractors count too. Under OSHA 1926.51, a crew of 20 or fewer workers needs at least 1 toilet.

Where should a porta potty go in your driveway?

Put the porta potty on firm, level ground, such as the side of a driveway or a flat patch of gravel. Our truck needs to park within about 25 feet of the unit. A standard unit is 43.5 inches wide, so any gate must be at least 4 feet wide.

  • Leave room to back cars out past the unit.
  • Avoid soft lawn after rain. A loaded truck can rut a wet yard.
  • Watch for low wires and tree limbs over the truck path.
  • You do not need to be home. Mark the spot with a cone or text us a photo.

Think about night use too. A unit close to the back door with a porch light nearby is easier for kids and older family members. A dark walk across a wet yard is not.

The porta potty placement guide has photos of good and bad spots.

How does the 28-day billing cycle work for a home rental?

A home rental longer than a week bills every 28 days from the delivery day. Each cycle includes weekly service. To stop billing, call at least 2 business days before the cycle ends. For a job of 7 days or less, the flat event price is usually cheaper.

Monthly units stay until you call for pickup.

Full billing details are on the long-term porta potty rental page and in the rental terms.

How often is a home porta potty cleaned?

A monthly home porta potty is cleaned once a week. Each visit includes a pump-out, scrub and sanitize, fresh paper and sanitizer, and new deodorizer. A family of 4 plus a work crew may need a second weekly visit, which you can add at any time.

The driver can tell when a unit is getting heavy use. If the tank is close to full on a weekly visit, we will suggest a second visit or a second unit before it becomes a problem.

Families often want a sink. A deluxe flushing unit with a sink adds a foot-pump flush and fresh water for hand washing. It is a good fit when kids will use the unit.

How do you keep neighbors and the HOA happy?

Check your HOA rules before delivery day, since some ask for notice or a set spot. Place the unit at least 10 feet from a neighbor's fence where you can, with the door facing your house. Ask for a free lock, and call for pickup the day the job ends.

  • Tell next-door neighbors how long the unit will stay.
  • Keep the unit behind a car or fence line if the HOA asks.
  • Weekly service keeps odor down, so a home unit rarely draws complaints.

If your HOA asks questions, give them the expected end date and tell them the unit gets serviced weekly. A short, clear answer up front heads off most complaints.

Homeowner rental questions

Can I rent a porta potty for just a few days while the water is off?

A short rental works fine. The event rental is a flat price for up to 7 days, with delivery and pickup included. If the repair runs long, call and we switch you to the 28-day cycle.

Will a porta potty in my driveway smell?

Each unit has a deodorizer, a roof vent, and weekly pump-out on monthly rentals. Placing the door away from the sun and a neighbor's window helps too.

Can my contractor's crew use the same unit as my family?

One unit can serve a family and a small crew. For more than about 10 people a day, add a second unit or a second weekly service visit.

How much does a monthly porta potty cost for a remodel?

A standard monthly unit typically runs about $165–$225 per 28-day cycle, including weekly service. These are typical ranges; your itemized quote is the final price.

Can you lock the unit so only my family uses it?

A free lock or hasp is available on request. Tell us when you book, and the driver brings it with the unit.
