What is a wheelchair accessible porta potty?
A wheelchair accessible porta potty is a larger unit, 62 by 62 inches, with a ground-level roll-in floor. The door opening is 32 inches wide. Handrails sit inside, and the floor area tops 16 square feet. A standard unit is 43.5 inches wide, so a wheelchair cannot turn inside one.

How many ADA porta potties does a Gulfport event need?
The 2010 ADA Standards, section 213.2, cover clustered portable toilets. At least 5% of the units in each cluster must be accessible, and you round up. For 22 units in one cluster, 5% is 1.1, so plan 2 accessible units. Any cluster of 1 to 20 units needs at least 1.
| Units in one cluster | 5% of the cluster | Accessible units (rounded up) |
|---|---|---|
| 1–20 | 0.05–1.0 | 1 |
| 21–40 | 1.05–2.0 | 2 |
| 41–60 | 2.05–3.0 | 3 |
| 61–80 | 3.05–4.0 | 4 |
The exception in 2010 ADA Standards section 213.2 says that where single-user portable toilets are clustered at one location, no more than 5 percent of the units in each cluster must comply with section 603. Accessible units are marked with the International Symbol of Accessibility. Read the full text in the Access Board PDF.

Does the unit give a wheelchair a 60-inch turning space?
The 2010 ADA Standards describe a turning space as a circle at least 60 inches in diameter, or a T-shaped space. The accessible unit measures 62 inches on the outside, and the walls take up some of that. Ask your permit office or venue whether this unit meets the rule they enforce.
We describe the unit as wheelchair-accessible because the manufacturer does. We do not certify that any unit meets the ADA. The agency or venue that issues your permit decides that, so confirm with them before the event.

Where should the accessible unit go?
Set the accessible unit on level, firm ground at the end of a cluster closest to the crowd. The path to the door needs to be smooth, with no curb, deep grass or loose sand. Leave about 5 feet of clear space in front of the 32-inch door so a wheelchair can line up.
- Good spots: pavement, packed gravel, short firm grass.
- Poor spots: slopes, soft sand, muddy low ground, behind a curb.
- The truck still needs to park within about 25 feet for service.
The 2010 Standards also call for an accessible route to accessible restrooms. The placement guide shows how to prep the spot.
Do construction sites need a handicap porta potty?
Section 203.2 of the 2010 ADA Standards exempts portable toilets used only by construction workers on a construction site. Those units do not have to be accessible or on an accessible route. The exemption ends when the public uses the units, such as at a sales trailer or a site open house.
A crew member who uses a wheelchair still needs a usable restroom. See the construction porta potty page for crew counts.
Who decides how many accessible units your permit needs?
The permit office or venue decides. The City of Gulfport public event permit asks for 2 numbers: total portable toilets and how many are ADA accessible. Biloxi, Ocean Springs and county parks may ask the same. Call the office before you book and order the count they give you.

Accessible porta potty questions
Does the ADA one have a ramp?
The wheelchair-accessible unit has no ramp because it does not need one. The floor sits at ground level, so a wheelchair rolls straight in. That only works on level, firm ground, so pick the flattest spot you have.
Does the handicap porta potty have a sink?
The accessible unit has a hand sanitizer dispenser, not a sink. Place a hand-wash station on level ground next to the unit if guests need water.
What's the difference between an ADA and a handicap porta potty?
People use both names for the same large unit with a roll-in floor, handrails and a 32-inch door. We call ours wheelchair-accessible. Whether a unit meets your permit's ADA rule is up to the permit office or venue.
Is the accessible unit ADA approved?
Portable toilets are not certified for the ADA by any agency. The manufacturer calls this unit wheelchair-accessible. Show the specs on this page to your permit office or venue and ask them to confirm.
I only have 4 porta potties. Do I still need an accessible one?
Plan 1 accessible unit for any cluster of 1 to 20 units. Five percent of 4 is 0.2, and that rounds up to 1. Your permit office has the final say.
How much does a wheelchair accessible porta potty cost?
A wheelchair-accessible unit for an event typically runs about $200–$300, with delivery and pickup included. Ranges are a planning guide; the quote we send has the real total.
Can a family member at home use the accessible unit during a remodel?
The accessible unit works well when a bathroom is torn out during a remodel. Book a monthly rental with weekly service. See long-term porta potty rental for how billing works.
