How many toilets does OSHA require on a construction site?
OSHA sets the legal minimum in 29 CFR 1926.51, Table D-1. A crew of 20 or fewer needs 1 toilet. A crew of 20 or more needs 1 toilet seat and 1 urinal per 40 workers. At 200 or more workers, the minimum becomes 1 toilet seat and 1 urinal per 50 workers.
| Number of employees | Minimum number of facilities |
|---|---|
| 20 or less | 1. |
| 20 or more | 1 toilet seat and 1 urinal per 40 workers. |
| 200 or more | 1 toilet seat and 1 urinal per 50 workers. |
Read the full rule on the eCFR text of 29 CFR 1926.51. Each standard porta potty has a seat and a urinal, so one unit counts as one of each.
Is the OSHA minimum enough for a 40-hour work week?
The OSHA table is the legal floor, not a comfortable count. Following PSAI guidance, we recommend 1 unit per 10 workers on a 40-hour week with weekly service. A 35-person crew is legal with 1 standard unit, but that unit fills and smells by Wednesday.
| Crew size | OSHA legal minimum | Standard units that meet it | Our recommendation (40-hour week, weekly service) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 8 workers | 1 toilet | 1 | 1 unit |
| 20 workers | 1 toilet | 1 | 2 units |
| 35 workers | 1 seat + 1 urinal | 1 | 4 units |
| 60 workers | 2 seats + 2 urinals | 2 | 6 units |
| 120 workers | 3 seats + 3 urinals | 3 | 12 units |
| 250 workers | 5 seats + 5 urinals | 5 | 25 units |
Worked example, 35 workers. Legal minimum: 35 ÷ 40 = 0.875, rounded up to 1 seat and 1 urinal, so 1 standard unit. Our count: 35 ÷ 10 = 3.5, rounded up to 4 units. Running 10-hour days or Saturdays? Add a second weekly service visit or 1 more unit.
Do job site toilets need hand-washing stations?
OSHA 1926.51(f) requires washing facilities when crews apply paint, coatings, herbicides or insecticides, or work where contaminants may be harmful. The facilities must sit near the work and stay sanitary. One 2-sink hand-wash station handles nearly 350 uses per fill, enough for most painting or concrete crews.
Washing facilities
Paint, stucco, sealant and spray crews are the usual trigger. Put the hand-wash station beside the toilets so the service truck refills it on the same weekly stop.
Accessible units on crew-only sites
The 2010 ADA Standards, section 203.2, exempt construction sites from accessibility rules when the toilets are used only by the construction crew. Once the public or a finished-building tenant uses them, plan a wheelchair-accessible unit.
How do weekly service and 28-day billing work on a job site?
Each construction porta potty is billed every 28 days from delivery and serviced once a week, so every cycle includes 4 visits. Each visit pumps the tank, cleans and sanitizes, restocks paper and sanitizer, and adds fresh deodorizer. There is no long contract. Units stay until you call for pickup.
- The driver sets a regular service weekday, so your foreman knows when to expect the truck.
- Large crews or long shifts can add a second weekly visit.
- Call at least 2 business days before a cycle ends to stop billing. The monthly rental billing guide shows example dates.
Starting a job next week?
Give us the site address, crew size and start date. We send an itemized 28-day quote.
Where should a porta potty go on a construction site?
Set each job site toilet on firm, level ground where the service truck can park within about 25 feet. Keep it clear of crane swing radius, equipment traffic and delivery lanes, and off the low spot that floods after a Gulf Coast rain. Weekly service stops working when the truck cannot reach the unit.
- Firm pad or gravel, not fresh fill that will settle.
- Away from overhead loads, swinging booms and backing trucks.
- Close to where the crew works, so nobody walks across the site.
- Gate code and lockbox details on the order for fenced sites.
More detail on slopes, soft ground and truck access is in the porta potty placement guide.

What happens to job site units during hurricane season?
Hurricane season on the Coast runs June 1 to November 30. When a named storm threatens, we contact you to pick up the units or tie them down. After the storm passes, we bring units back for cleanup crews. Tell us which units can leave and which must stay tied down for the crew.
NOAA hurricane season climatology shows most storm activity falls between mid-August and mid-October. Our hurricane-season rental plan covers what to do on your end before the trucks arrive.
Which Gulf Coast job sites do we supply?
We supply 5 kinds of local job sites most often: new subdivisions north of I-10, commercial pads on the US 49 corridor, Port of Gulfport contractors, Seabee base contractors at NCBC Gulfport, and casino renovation crews. Each one changes access, gate rules or crew size, so tell us the site type when you call.
Subdivisions and US 49
Harrison County is growing north along US 49 toward Saucier. New lots often have soft fill, so we set units on the firmest pad near the street.
Port and Seabee base
Port and NCBC Gulfport jobs need gate access arranged before delivery. Send the escort or pass details with the order so the driver is not turned away.
Casino work
Casino renovations in Biloxi and Gulfport often run night shifts. Add a second weekly service visit when two crews share the units.
Construction porta potty questions
We need one on a jobsite next week. What's the price for the first month and after?
A standard job-site unit typically runs about $165–$225 per 28-day cycle, with weekly service included. The first bill also lists delivery, and the last bill lists pickup. Your exact price depends on dates, unit and distance, and the itemized quote shows it before you book.
Is the servicing automatic, or do I have to schedule it?
Weekly service is automatic on monthly rentals. The driver picks a regular weekday for your site and comes back every week until you call for pickup. Tell us if the gate will be locked on that day.
Can I move it myself afterwards?
Ask us before moving a unit. Moving it yourself is at your own risk, and tipping damage is billed to the renter. The service truck must still reach it within about 25 feet, so call (228) 261-9696 and we can move it for you.
Do I need a handicap porta potty on my job site?
Section 203.2 of the 2010 ADA Standards exempts construction sites when the toilets are used only by the construction crew. If the public or a building tenant will also use the restroom, add a wheelchair-accessible unit.
Can you take over from our current porta potty company?
We can deliver on the last day of your current provider's cycle, so you do not pay two companies for the same week. Give us the unit count, the service day you want and the site contact.
Can the rental be under our business name and invoiced?
Rentals can be set up under your company name. Approved businesses can be invoiced, and all major credit and debit cards work. Tax-exempt organizations should send the exemption certificate with the order.
Is there a discount for several units on one site?
Multi-unit orders on one site get a single delivery charge instead of one per unit. Weekly service for all the units happens on the same stop.
